Saranya Ozhukil Keralan

A passionate student, singer, rasika & teacher, Saranya Ozhukil Keralan founded SVSM in 2010 in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA.

Saranya started her musical journey at a very early age. She was introduced to the joy of singing and music by her mother. She was introduced to formal Carnatic training at the age of 9 by her uncle Hari Killimangalam. After having trained in basics, she continued her training under Shobha Sharasyar and Jayalakshmi Paliyam in Thrissur, Kerala. During her undergraduate days, she was trained by eminent Carnatic musicians Thiruvalla Rajeev Kumar & his wife Suma Rajeev. She was also trained by Sri Subhadra Thampuran, in Thrippunithura.

Saranya moved to the US in 2009. For five years, she took training in Hindustani Classical Music under Smt. Amrita Biswas (Aarohan School of Music, Charlotte, NC, USA). While in the US, she continued her training in Carnatic music from Smt. Uma Shankar. She is currently being trained by Smt. Sindhu. K. Das, an eminent musician and a gold medalist from Madras Music Academy. She has also attended special vocal training workshops by eminent Carnatic Musicians O S Thyagarajan, Vijayalakshmi Subrahmanian & Trichur Brothers. She has also been trained in eastern & western keyboard/piano by Amrita Biswas and Linda Francis (Charlotte) respectively.

Saranya considers it a blessing that she was able to sing at the Poornathrayeesha Temple, Thrippunithura accompanying her then Guru Smt. Subhadra Thampuran. She has also given vocal accompaniments to Bharatanatyam Arangetrams and other dance dramas; most notable one being “Sarvam Krishnarppanam”, a dance drama by Sri Saraswati Nritya Nilayam (Guru Smt. Uma Sakthi) in the greater Charlotte area. She has also given keyboard accompaniments to Music recitals.

In addition to all of these, she is a full time homemaker and mother to two toddlers. She thanks her family & friends for their continuous support & motivation.
